What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, in combination with counseling and other therapies, to help treat people who use drugs. MAT is used to help prevent or reduce substance use by alleviating cravings and withdrawals. MAT is most commonly used to help individuals using opioids but is also used for individuals using alcohol. New medications are being studied and trialed to help people who use other drugs–such as meth and benzodiazepines. For minors, it can be especially difficult to access these medications.
